Design + Planning
Community Based
Locally Focused
Rural Advocate
At EJD+P, we believe that the problems of this century will not be solved by the same thinking that created them. Our work is rooted in big ideas, resourceful solutions, and the deep belief that we must dream beyond the conventional to create resilient, thriving communities for future generations.
Key Principles:
Dreaming Big
We are committed to innovation and bold thinking. The challenges we face today require solutions that rethink the way we design, plan, and build. From climate resilience to rural revitalization, we push boundaries and envision new ways to create lasting impacts.Building Craftsmanship
Every project carries the history of craftsmanship. We honor the legacy of building with human hands, infusing each design with the mastery and artistry that speaks to generations of learning. Our spaces are built to foster connection, community, and the art of living.Stewarding the Environment
We believe in leaving things better than we found them. Our design and planning are guided by environmental stewardship, ensuring that our work lessens the burden on future generations and regenerates natural systems to create a healthier, more sustainable world.Listening Deeply
The best design comes from truly listening to the people we serve. We engage deeply with our clients and the communities we work with to understand their needs, dreams, and values, translating them into the built environment in meaningful and lasting ways.
Founded in 2008 and reorganized in 2020, EJD+P is a woman-owned, multidisciplinary Design and Planning studio based in Colorado. Led by Electra Johnson, who was born and raised in rural southern Colorado, EJD+P focuses on rural advocacy and planning for communities across the state. After years of working in transit-oriented development and smart growth, Electra recognized the growing disparities between urban and rural areas and shifted her focus to ensure that rural communities receive the attention and support they deserve.
Our Expertise:
With over 25 years of experience, EJD+P specializes in designing places that foster community and connection. Our work spans from homes, schoolyards, public gathering spaces, and parks, to downtown revitalization projects, transit systems, and economic revitalization plans for both small towns and big cities.
We create places of sanctuary and connection with nature—from river walks and wildlife sanctuaries to public parks and fairgrounds. We also provide strategic planning services, including Master Plans, Land Use Code updates, and economic development strategies.
Our Commitment to Rural Communities:
One of Colorado’s most pressing equity issues is access to resources like water. EJD+P focuses on preparing both cities and rural areas for a future where water conservation, power systems, local food production, and resilient communities are essential. Our planning projects always aim to act as an advocate for the community, helping to secure funding to ensure that our designs are implemented.
Our Planning Process:
Our approach is built on deep community outreach and listening, ensuring that we hear and understand the needs of every individual and community we serve. We focus on local solutions to sustainable development, balancing economic development with preservation of natural landscapes, agriculture, and wildlife corridors. Through partnerships with municipalities and counties, we help develop strategic plans, land use code updates, and guidelines to support vibrant communities and local economies.
At EJD+P, we recognize the choices we make today shape tomorrow. It is our duty to leave a better world for our children and grandchildren, and we are committed to building that future through thoughtful design, responsible stewardship, and creative solutions.
